So you want a Nassau County (NY) Pistol permit....
Proceed with the following steps:
- Read the Nassau County Pistol License Handbook.
A copy can be found here.
- Complete your application package.
As of 2026 you do this online at https://app.nassaucountyny.gov/ncpd/pistol-permit/
- Schedule your fingerprint appointment.
This used to happen when you brought your application package to
police HQ in Mineola. Now it happens in the online application.
- Complete your character references and PPB-3 "fingerprint card"
You can get these forms at Police HQ in Mineola, or they will be
provided to you when you go to your fingerprint appointment.
I have made copies available here
Please check with NCPD Pistol Section to determine if these
forms are what is currently in use in Nassau.
If they aren't NCPD may not accept them.
If my forms are out of date I'd appreciate copies of the new forms.
- Go to your fingerprint appointment, have a nice chat with the
folks who take your prints and photo (this is your "interview")
- Wait a while - NCPD will contact you by email (from
pistols@pdcn.org) or telephone to tell you your permit is ready.
- Go to Police HQ in Mineola and pick up your permit.
Remember to ask for your semi-auto rifle card while you're there.
(The counter folks will usually ask you if you want it, it's $10
to print the card.)
Frequently Asked Questions
(Mostly cribbed from r/nyguns)
Q: I have some conviction or arrest on my record, do I need to report it and explain it to NCPD?
A: YES! - follow the instructions, failing to disclose something is a material omission and grounds for denying your application.
If you are unsure whether NCPD will "see" something on your records you can pull your own FBI Identity History Summary and NY State DCJS history (you want the "15465F" unsuppressed record). If it's on either of those NY State will definitely see it.
